SCOTT #2862 JAMES THURBER 29 CENT

     Author, humorist, play-write, and cartoonist James Thurber published 31 books and was frequently featured in the New Yorker magazine. His popular works include the short story, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," and the play "The Male Animal." This stamp features a Thurber self-portrait titled "Male Type."






                              

SCOTT #2875 100TH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE $2.00

     This souvenir sheet celebrates the 100th Anniversary of U. S. stamp printing by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Previously, private companies had printed American stamps. The Scott #262 stamp featured on the sheet was created in 1894 and was one of the first two designed at the BEP.






                           

SCOTT #2966 POW/MIA 32 CENT

     Issued on Memorial Day, May 29th, 1995, the POW/MIA stamp features a pair of identification tags--often called Dog Tags. Military veterans and their supporters conducted an extensive lobbying campaign to get this stamp issued. Public response was overwhelming -- hundreds of thousand of people signed petitions supporting it's issue.





                                  

SCOTT #73 ANDREW JACKSON 2 CENT

     With the introduction of home delivery in 1862, a 2 cent stamp was needed. The design picturing our 7th U.S. President was put in use. The famous stamp is know to collectors as the "Black Jack".
     Now here is the interesting part. In 1863 a Confederate 2 cent stamp uses the same portrait. So the USA and the CSA had a 2 cent stamp with the portrait of Andrew Jackson, at the same time, during the civil war.








                                      

SCOTT #2975 CIVIL WAR SOUVENIR SHEET 32 CENT

     With all the controversy we have today, I thought I would re-post the Civil War Souvenir sheet that has the likes of Robert E. Lee and the President of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis.
      The designs for the Civil War sheet were painstakingly researched by leading authorities. Each stamp is historically accurate --- right down to the bridles used on the horses.
      Are we now supposed to burn all these stamps that pertain to the old South?







                         

SCOTT #3000 COMIC STRIP CLASSICS 32 CENT

     Few people know that 100 years ago yellow journalism got it's name from America's first comic strip--"The Yellow Kid." A purely American art form the comics have been going strong ever since, giving is our daily dose of fun and laughter. The Postal Service estimates 113 million Americans read the Sunday comics regularly!
     The 1995 Comic Strip Classics stamps illustrate 20 strips from the first 50 years of the "funnies". The back of each stamp features a capsule history of the comics on the front.







                         

SCOTT #3081 BREAST CANCER AWARENESS 32 CENT

     The Breast Cancer Awareness stamp was part of a public service campaign to raise awareness of the disease that maims and kills thousands of women annually. The pink ribbon today symbolizes public education and the quest for a cure.









                            

SCOTT #3082 JAMES DEAN 32 CENT

     An intense, restless, brooding young man of the 1950's, Dean came to symbolize youthful frustration and rebelliousness, especially the kind that dominated the turbulent 1960's and 1970's.
     before the car accident that took his young life, Dean managed to make 3 critic acclaimed movies. His first movie Rebel Without a Cause was perfect type casting and made him an instant star. He followed Rebel with East of Eden and his last movie,Giant, also starred Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson.





                              

SCOTT #3083-86 FOLK HEROES 32 CENT

     Did you know that of these four folk heroes, one was actually a real man. John Henry worked as a steel-driving man for the Chesapeake & Ontario Railroad. In 1870, he died while drilling a tunnel in West Virginia.









                              

SCOTT #3091-95 RIVERBOATS 32 CENT

     The Riverboat stamp introduced a new kind of mint stamp-self adhesives that separate with the backing intact.
     This se-tenant pays tribute to all the the steamboats that opened the Hudson, Mississippi, Missouri, Columbia, and Chattahoochee rivers.
             







                                  

SCOTT #3119 CYCLING SOUVENIR SHEET 50 CENT

     From 1926-2004, the U.S. Postal Service sponsored the U.S. Pro Cycling Team. From 1999-2005, Lance Armstrong stunned the world by leading the team to an unprecedented seven consecutive wins at the legendary Tour de France, cycling's most prestigious race.
      Enough said, we all know how that turned out.






                                 

SCOTT #3105 ENDANGERED SPECIES 32 CENT

     From the elegant Schaus swallowtail butterfly to the stealthy Florida panther, this sheet captures the unique character and beauty of 15 animals on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Endangered Species list. Issued for National Stamp Collecting Month, the theme of which was, "Protect and Collect", this sheet calls attention to their plight.
      Each stamp design is based on photographs by James Balog, whose work can be found in National Geographic and Outside magazines. Balog found the idea of creating photographs that would be reduced to stamp size a challenge-but as you can see the results are spectacular.
