1869 PICTORIALS

The 1869 Pictorials are widely considered the forerunners of US commemoratives!  They advertised America’s past and its proud future.  Their designs reflect the advancements our nation made in 1869.  The 3¢ stamp pictured a steam train, honoring the expected completion of the Transcontinental Railroad.  The 12¢ stamp showed the finest and fastest ship afloat – the SS Adriatic.  Lincoln is pictured on the set’s most important stamp (90¢) because he saved the Union…
