On March 2, 1972, Pioneer 10 launched
from Cape Canaveral, Florida. It became the first spacecraft ever to
leave our Solar System! It also captured the first closeup photos of
Jupiter along with information about the planet’s weather and
atmosphere.
After Jupiter, Pioneer 10 passed Saturn in
1976 and Uranus in 1979. On June 13, 1983, after crossing Neptune’s
orbit, the spaceship became the first man-made object to go beyond the
major planets of our solar system. Scientists estimate that Pioneer 10 is now over 11 billion miles from Earth!
