On
October 9, 1874, Universal Postal Union (UPU) was established by 22
countries. The UPU is the organization that sets the rules for the flow
of mail between countries. Since it was formed, the UPU has worked to
connect every person, regardless of nationality, through a safe,
efficient, and orderly mail system.
In 1947, the UPU became a
specialized agency of the United Nations and began holding conventions
every five years. Today, 192 member states have joined the Universal
Postal Union.
