On October 2, 1933, one of my favorite US stamps was issued in New York City – #C18. The stamp had a total of five First Days of Issue – one at each city the Graf Zeppelin stopped at from New York to Chicago. Today, stamps have only one First Day of Issue, so this was quite unusual! The stamp satisfied the 50¢ postage rate for mail traveling aboard the enormous airship. It pictures the Zeppelin’s hangar in Germany on the right and the Federal Building at the Chicago World’s Fair on the left.
The Graf Zeppelin arrived at the Chicago World’s Fair on October 26 to great fanfare. It circled the fairgrounds for two hours, spent just 25 minutes on the ground, and then ascended once more. It was a day all in attendance would never forget. Only about 324,000 #C18 stamps sold. The remaining 90% of the Post Office Department’s stock was destroyed, making it scarce today in any condition.
