SCOTT #3000 COMIC STRIP CLASSICS 32 CENT

     Few people know that 100 years ago yellow journalism got it's name from America's first comic strip--"The Yellow Kid."  A purely American art form, the comic's have been going strong ever since, giving us our daily dose of fun and laughter. The Postal Service estimates that 113 million Americans read the Sunday comics regularly.

                                

SCOTT #2841 MOON LANDING 29 CENT

     On July 20, 1969, astronaut Neil Armstrong spoke the words, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind," and stepped out of the safety of the lunar module "Eagle" and onto the surface of the moon. This stamp celebrates the 25th anniversary of that amazing achievement.

                              

SCOTT #2818 BUFFALO SOLIDERS 29 CENT

     Long missing from the history of the West is the story of the all African-American cavalry regiments or "Buffalo Soldiers." These valiant soldiers were named by their Native American opponents, who thought they were as tough as buffalo.

                                 

 

SCOTT #4377 EDGAR ALLAN POE 42 CENT

     Edgar Allan Poe was one on America's greatest poets and fiction writers. A masterful storyteller with a vivid imagination. Poe (1809-1849) is famous for having written such gripping tales as The Fall of the House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Tell-Tale Heart, and The Black Cat. His Murders in the Rue Morgue, featuring a brilliant French investigator named c. Auguste Dupin, has been called the first detective story. Poe also wrote some of the most memorable poems in American literature. These include Eldorado, The Bells, The Raven, and my favorite Annabel Lee.

                          

SCOTT #2437-37 UNIVERSAL POSTAL CONGRESS 25 CENT

     The souvenir sheet shown below were the first American stamps to directly honor the Universal Postal Congress .Each stamp features a classic mode of mail delivery: a stagecoach, a steamboat, a Jenny, and an early automobile.
     These stamps specifically commemorated the 20th Universal Postal Congress, held at the Washington Convention Center.
