1869 PICTORIAL ISSUES SCOTT #112-122

The 1869 Pictorial Stamps were the first U.S. stamps to feature something other than the bust or head of a famous American leader. Also they were the first two-color U.S. stamps. The stamps were printed by the American Bank Note Company, and all have the "G" grill pattern. These stamps were revolutionary and a precursor of the commemoratives to come.
Here is the interesting fact. The new stamps were unpopular with the public. In fact, the stamps were so unsuccessful they were withdrawn from sale within a year of release.
Because of that fact, the 1869 Pictorials are philatelic treasures. The great impact they have had on stamp collecting is obvious. Today these stamps printed in 1869 Classic period, are among the most sought-after in the world. The fact that they were printed for only one year adds to their collectibility.
Pictorials are very difficult to find today and are prized in both mint and used conditions.

  2. If we're are talking mint condition, the 1 cent could be worth as much as $500.00 and the 90 cent could bring as much as $6,000.00. In used condition they run from $15.00 to $2000.00.
